Malaria – let’s keep up the fight!
Between 2003 and 2009, international aid in the battle against malaria rose to 4.6 billion dollars. Those leading the WHO’s Roll Back Malaria Partnership are delighted to report that efforts are intensifying in terms of both prevention and treatment.
In 2008, the funding required for the next 10 years was estimated at between 5 and 6 billion dollars, because once underway, efforts must not be allowed to slacken. Particularly as in certain countries where malaria is endemic, significant results have been achieved.
Mosquito nets impregnated with insecticide, the spraying of homes with long-lasting insecticide, rapid diagnosis tests … all these different methods have together helped to reduce both morbidity and mortality.
The World Health Organisation in fact recommends that diagnostic testing be systematically carried out in all suspected cases, particularly as means of effectively diagnosing and treating malaria now exist.
Every year, more than 250 million cases of malaria occur worldwide, causing 860,000 deaths, 85% of whom are children. And the majority of these occur in Africa.
