Malaria – progress in mosquito net distribution
[mis à jour le 11 December 2008 à 10h25]
Good news for Africa! The distribution of insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets is in full swing –in 7 years, the number of children benefiting from this form of protection has risen from 1.7 million to 18.5 million. Which is an increase of 98.8%! The bad news is that there are still more than 90 million children who are still not protected against malaria.
These figures come from a study carried out by researchers in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. According to their research, last year 18.5% of children living in an African country where malaria is endemic had the benefit of insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets … compared with 1.8% in 2000.
While the authors are pleased to highlight this enormous progress, they also remind us that more than 80% of children in these countries – ie around 90 million – are still without access. And 25 million of these children live in Nigeria alone.
