Mayonnaise as head lice treatment?

Mayonnaise as head lice treatment?

Is your child constantly scratching his head? Check the nape of his neck and behind his ears because he may have head lice. There are a number of ways of getting rid of them: there are lotion-type treatments… and then there’s mayonnaise! Let’s look at the options.

Generally speaking, pediculosis (head lice infestation) is treated by the use shampoos, gels, creams and other anti-head lice treatments. In the majority of cases, the treatments available are effective, even though there has been some development of resistance in recent years. Always be sure to consult your doctor or pharmacist before using these.

But what if you don’t want to use chemical products? Of course you can always opt for the head lice removal fine-tooth comb used on wet hair. This is very effective in getting rid of head lice and nits. But it is a bit of a chore. This fiddly task has to be continued for at least 30 minutes every day until every last creepy crawly has been eliminated – and that can take up to 2 weeks!

So, if you’re looking for a radical but gentle solution, try rubbing mayonnaise on to your child’s head! But don’t rinse it off straight away. Rub the mayonnaise in, then put a shower cap over it and leave it on overnight. The next day, rinse his hair in white vinegar and water to wash it all out. The head lice should have disappeared. If you find the idea of using mayonnaise off-putting – which is quite understandable – try Vaseline or olive oil instead. But unlike the mayonnaise option, you will then have to repeat the operation for several nights running.
