Men – keep an eye on your testosterone level after the age of 60
[mis à jour le 4 March 2008 à 14h21]
As we grow older, both men and women experience a decrease in their hormone production. And a lack of testosterone can sometimes cause problems.
At the age of 60, having a low level of this hormone leads to a much increased risk of fractures due to osteoporosis. According to a study carried out in Australia, it is essential to avoid that initial accident because the risk of another fracture increases fourfold for men in comparison with a woman in the same situation! Which means that prevention is of the essence.
Researchers at the University of Sydney observed a direct correlation between having a low testosterone level and the occurrence of fractures of the hip or vertebrae in those men with the lowest levels of the hormone. Hence the importance of keeping an eye on your testosterone level via a blood test if you experience problems or unusual fatigue after the age of 60.
