Migraine linked to heart disease in men…

It appears that male migraine sufferers are at particular risk of heart disease... though women aren’t. This hypothesis is the result of an extensive study conducted by a team of American researchers on 20,000 individuals monitored over the course of 25 years.

Every year participants were asked to answer a series of questions relating to their cardiovascular health. In total 1,449 men stated that they suffered from migraines. The results show that the incidence of cardiovascular disease reached 10.5 per 10,000 among the latter, compared with 8.5 in a control group consisting of non-migraine sufferers.

The author of the report stresses in particular the large number of heart attacks experienced by migraine sufferers. “We believe that there is a biological link between migraine and cardiovascular accidents”, points out Professor Tobias Kurth of Harvard Medical School, Boston. To be continued…
