Migraine sufferers – watch out for your eyes!
“Older people with a history of migraine are at greater risk of developing retinopathy”. For the first time, American researchers have established a link between this disease of the retina – which can lead to blindness – and the presence of migraine attacks.
Professor Kathryn M. Rose and her colleagues from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill studied the medical records of 10,902 men and women taking part in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. Their aim was to examine the ocular health of patients who had suffered from migraines for many years.
The results show that male and female migraine sufferers are at particular risk of developing retinopathy. “Between 1.3 and 1.5 times higher than average”, according to the authors. And this has nothing to do with the presence of diabetes or high blood pressure. “We checked everything”, Professor Rose points out. Obviously further studies will be needed to shed more light on this direct link between migraine and retinopathy.
