It can even help regulate our moods! It would appear too that musicians have above-average intellectual capacity. They seem to have a much better memory and better aptitude for reading and mathematical calculation.
However, there’s no need to be an experienced instrumentalist or singer to benefit from music: simply listening to it can also perform miracles! Music therapy often forms part of the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Its beneficial effects have also been shown in connection with other ageing-related conditions. For example, in Parkinson’s disease, where music improves motor coordination and walking, in terms of both speed and distance covered. According to a 2008 Finnish study, listening to music can also improve intellectual recovery after a cerebral vascular accident (stroke).
