Smoking can take years off your life

Yet another study has confirmed the role played by smoking in premature adult death. According to Finnish research, a heavy smoker (ie someone who smokes at least 20 cigarettes a day) is quite simply likely to die 10 years younger than a non-smoker. And the more a person smokes, the shorter life expectancy becomes.
For 25 years, researchers at the University of Helsinki monitored 1,700 men born between 1919 and 1934. During the period of study, 372 of the participants died. In the majority of cases these were smokers, with non-smokers living longer on average than smokers. And, most importantly, enjoying a much better quality of life. Another interesting finding is that among the 66% of smokers who gave up smoking during the monitoring period, only 44% died. Which shows how important it is to quit smoking as soon as possible.
