New neurons have an excitable nature…

[6 November 2009 - 14h43]

Research teams at the Pasteur Institute and the CNRS (the French National Centre for Scientific Research) have recently shown that at the start of their life, new neurons are hyperactive.

This characteristic disappears after a few weeks and they eventually slip into the usual mould and become like all other neurons. “For the first twelve weeks of their life, a crucial period for their integration into the nerve circuits, these young cells are particularly responsive to stimulation”, points out Pierre-Marie Lledo of the Perception and Memory Unit at the Pasteur Institute. “They show increased learning capacity”, he continues.

But these ravenous newcomers soon run out of energy. In fact, the researchers have shown that two weeks after formation, only 50% of them are successful at integrating into the neuronal circuits. Yet this is essential to their survival.
