Osteoporosis can be treated!
[mis à jour le 28 April 2004 à 15h19]
Osteoporosis is often seen by women as a degenerative process which nothing can stop, an inevitable consequence of ageing! Because it is after menopause, around the age of 60, that the consequences of this affliction begin to appear.
Osteoporosis consists of bone density loss, which causes fragile bones. But contrary to popular beliefs, it really is a disease which can be treated and whose evolution can be stopped. The reason that osteoporosis is not considered to be a disease is undoubtedly cultural - Ah! The stooped rural grandmothers… - and related to the absence of serious or painful clinical symptoms during the initial stages of the disease.
In fact, women consider that osteoporosis is less serious than asthma, diabetes, cholesterol or breast cancer. Whereas, osteoporosis kills more women than breast, cervical, uterine and ovarian cancers combined… Furthermore, according to a generally accepted idea, a disease characteristic is its occurrence at any time in life, whereas osteoporosis is synonym of natural ageing of the body. Wrong! Osteoporosis is a real disease, a disease which has treatments.
Because, let’s not forget its often serious, sometimes dramatic consequences: height loss because of vertebral compression (3 cm or more), hip fractures - with a 25% mortality at one year - and also a significant loss in quality of life. A paradox since, for seniors today, life begins at 60!
