Our Body Mass Index can be a lifeline…
According to a British study, for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 and over, the risk of mortality increases by a third for each additional 5 points in excess of that figure. The effects of having a BMI of between 40 and 50 –which equates to severe obesity– are comparable to those of being a heavy smoker.
Researchers at the University of Oxford (Great Britain) were not surprised to discover that the lowest mortality was found in individuals whose BMI ranged between 22.5 and 25. The foundations on which this evaluation is based appear sound, with the research encompassing 57 studies and almost 900,000 patients. The results show that the risk increases once the BMI of 25 threshold is crossed.
With each 5-point increase in BMI, they noted a 10% increase in the risk of cancer, a 40% increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of between 60% and 120% of diabetes and kidney disease. So life expectancy definitely appears to be shortened by excess weight. Weighing a third more than normal can cost you three years of life. A timely warning…
