Our heart – the body’s incredible pump
Did you know that your heart – a hollow muscle weighing just 300 grams – works incredibly hard. though with apparent ease?
With each contraction it pumps between 65 cm3 and 100 cm3 of blood into our blood system. In men this extraordinary feat occurs about 70 times a minute and in women about 80 times a minute – and the volume of blood pumped is at least five to seven litres. On that basis, a few simple calculations show that the amount of blood pumped per hour is 300 to 400 litres, making between 7,000 and 10,000 litres per day!
Which is why it is so important to maintain this precious pump of ours in good running order. Particularly by keeping the coronary arteries that feed the heart in good health. This can be done by following a few simple healthy eating rules to bring down the level of bad cholesterol and by regularly checking both cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
