Passive smoking can affect the brain

[30 March 2009 - 14h45]

Yet another study on the harmful effects of passive smoking! According to British research, exposure to other people’s smoke appears to increase the risk of cognitive problems and hence, dementia.

A cause and effect link had already been established among regular smokers. Researchers at Cambridge University analysed the saliva of 5,000 non-smokers with an average age of 50. The aim was to measure the levels of cotinine, which is simply nicotine transformed by the body. All participants completed a series of tests aimed at evaluating their brain function.

The non-smokers with the highest cotinine levels produced the poorest test results. In an editorial, Dr Mark Eisner of the University of California (San Francisco) has put forward a possible explanation. Passive smoking is known to interfere with brain development in the early years of life.
