Putting baby to bed… choosing the right position, clothing, room temperature
There are 4 golden rules for putting your baby to bed safely: place him on his back; use a cot with bars; dress him in a baby sleep bag; make sure the room temperature is between 18°C and 20°C.
The back position. Placing babies in this position has led to a drastic drop in the number of cases of sudden infant death (cot death): 76% fewer since the early 1990s in a country such as France. When a baby is lying on his back, his face remains clear and uncovered, and there is no risk of suffocation.
No quilts or blankets. Get rid of quilts and blankets: your baby could slip underneath and get trapped. Put him in a baby sleep bag. This will give him freedom of movement with no risk of being trapped underneath.
A room temperature of between 18°C and 20°C. This is the ideal temperature for a bedroom … for children and for adults too!
A few more commonsense tips:
choose a cot with bars;
make sure that the mattress fits the cot perfectly;
avoid what the British call co-sleeping, in other words bringing your baby into bed to sleep with you. Not only is there a risk of rolling on top of him but you could also put him at risk of hyperthermia (overheating). Being tucked up tight with his parents, under a duvet or even under a pillow can cause an increase in body temperature.
