Security blankets – a child’s best friend…

[16 February 2012 - 12h03]

It might be a soft toy or perhaps just a piece of fabric – most young children have a favourite ‘security blanket’ that they never let go and take with them everywhere.

Experts refer to security blankets as transitional objects. This is an object in which a young child invests their affection and on to which they project their desires and feelings.

It’s impossible to force a particular toy or object on a child. Only he or she can choose it. In fact, some young children don’t need one. Others will not have a ‘regular’ security blanket – they will simply pick up a toy or some object when they feel the need. Then, there are other children who gain comfort from rubbing their nose, sucking their thumb, or even fiddling with a lock of hair!

So, how long should children keep their security blanket? There’s no set rule about this, although it’s best if they stop carrying it everywhere with them by the age of 3. In other words, when the child goes out, the security blanket should stay at home!

A final word of advice: when your child chooses their security blanket, try to get hold of another identical one. This will be a lifesaver if the first one gets lost. Or simply so that you can wash it… because it will need to go through the washing machine from time to time. And if your child realises this, be ready to explain that like them the security blanket needs to have a bath too.
