Smoking cannabis increases the risk of gum disease!

After years of uncertainty and debate about the harmful effects of marijuana, the truth is gradually beginning to emerge. The carcinogenic properties of the drug are now well established and it can hit us right in the mouth, putting our gums under attack!

It would appear that regular pot smokers have a 60% increased risk of developing periodontal disease. This is the conclusion reached by Dr W. Murray Thomson and his colleagues at the Dunedin School of Medicine in New Zealand, who monitored the gums of 900 volunteers over a 14-year period. Half of the group were regular cannabis smokers.

The biggest consumers have a 60% increased risk compared with non-smokers”, the authors conclude. And the risk is even greater still as this figure only concerns the “risk from cannabis itself, not from the tobacco smoked at the same time, the health effects of which we have separated out”, Dr Thomson states. In fact, tobacco is the primary risk factor for periodontal disease. And, as often happens, other risk factors – in this case cannabis and tobacco – are not simply added factors but actually increase the risk…
