Sport at school – a virus caught at a very young age

[19 February 2010 - 10h04]

The negative attitude of some PE teachers can put pupils off sport … for life! According to a study carried out in Canada, attitudes to exercise are shaped very early in life. And it all depends on the good or bad experience each of us has.

Some schoolteachers who are uninterested in physical education show limited willingness to encourage their pupils. Fortunately less common, the humiliation by over-demanding teachers of children who are poor performers, can also have very serious consequences: I’m 51 and I still have terribly negative memories of sports lessons at school, one participant in the study commented. Since that time, I have never experienced such dreadful humiliation as I did when doing sports at school.

It is important to remember that the element of play should always take precedence over the pursuit of performance. For young people to enjoy sport, they must be shown that it is a game; that they can do it with their little classmates and learn lots of new things in the process. Children will also get a lot more pleasure from sports activities at school if the rules are simple to follow. They need to enjoy sport without worrying about results, do it at their own pace and do it with enthusiasm.
