Sport is good for us whatever our age!
Exercise and sport remain important at any time of life. In fact experts recommend that we always maintain a sufficient level of activity – it’s good for the body … and also for the mind.
Keeping active increases our muscle strength. It gives us greater freedom of movement by keeping our joints in good condition. Not forgetting of course the other beneficial effects, particularly on blood pressure, cholesterol levels, weight and… our state of mind.
Many studies have shown the benefits of exercise in dealing with depression. And it can also help to combat stress and the feeling of isolation. Whatever your age and whatever shape you’re in, make sure you get some exercise. Thirty minutes a day is enough – try walking, gardening, swimming, dancing or DIY… the possibilities are almost endless. But don’t forget: moderate but regular exercise is far preferable to intensive but irregular activity.
A word of advice, however: if you have never exercised or if you are returning to exercise after a long gap, always go and see your doctor first. He will be able to check your physical condition and suggest the types of sport and levels of exercise suitable for you.
And if you really don’t want to take up a sport, try and find time in your daily schedule for the thirty minutes of exercise your body needs and stick to it. For example, you could spread this out across the day by using the stairs instead of taking the lift, by leaving your car where it is and walking short distances, or by getting off the bus a couple of stops early and walking the rest of the way. There’s no doubt that at all that your heart will thank you for it!
