Statins do not protect against Alzheimer’s disease!

[17 January 2008 - 12h51]
[mis à jour le 17 January 2008 à 17h51]

Various scientific studies had suggested that statins can help to prevent or delay Alzheimer’s disease. However, a new study has now dashed the hope offered by this theory. Statins, which are prescribed to treat high cholesterol, do not reduce the risk of dementia in the slightest.

This has been demonstrated by a study involving 1,000 American clergymen who were monitored over 12 years. Each year they underwent tests to assess their cognitive performance. They also agreed to an autopsy in which their brain would be examined following their death. Of those participating, 119 were on statins and 191 developed Alzheimer’s disease. “Our study did not show any link between this treatment and a slowing down of cognitive decline”, the author states.
