Stress is at the root of acne!

[12 March 2007 - 12h29]

It seems that school students subject to periods of severe stress are more likely to be affected by acne than their less anxious classmates. According to an American study, stress can cause inflammation which in turn can give rise to acne.

Professor Gil Yosipovitch of Wake Forest University studied 94 adolescents with an average age of 15. These students answered a questionnaire regarding their level of stress and the possible appearance of acne on two occasions – before and after an examination.

The youngsters who experienced an intense level of stress proved to have a 23% higher risk of suffering from acne than the others. Initially, the researchers suspected that stress increased sebum production. “Our research shows, however, that the association between anxiety and acne is in fact due to other causes”, states Professor Yosipovitch. “It is possible that inflammatory phenomena are involved”. So hormones aren’t to blame then… A more in-depth study will soon take place, meanwhile try not to let your children get over-stressed!
