Sugar – the brain’s best friend!
[mis à jour le 6 April 2009 à 17h39]
Glucose provides fuel for the brain… and it would be a real shame to go without it.
Glucose is the direct product of our body’s transformation of the carbohydrates in our diet and, carried by the blood, it provides the energy our muscles and brain require throughout the day. Like oxygen, the brain needs glucose constantly in order to perform complex brain functions such as memory. And, the longer and more difficult a task is, the more glucose the brain consumes!
Many studies have in fact shown that glucose improves short-term memory, speed of decision making, information processing and verbal recall. It can very readily be obtained by eating a diet rich in simple carbohydrates – present in sugar and fruit – and in the complex carbohydrates found in bread, pasta, rice etc.
In practical terms, you should start the day with a small breakfast high in carbohydrates such as bread, cereal, jam and fruit. This will improve your memory and attention abilities up to midday. And at midday, don’t skip your meal but make it light and balanced, and for your evening meal choose slow release carbohydrates such as pasta, lentils and beans.
