Sun cream doesn’t stop cancer!
Beware of the sun. The danger it presents is not simply getting sunburn. Of course, manufacturers of sun creams and sun lotions like to boast about the high protection their products offer, but beware: although they can to some extent limit the harmful effects of UV – ultraviolet rays – they do not protect against skin cancer.
Philippe Autier of the WHO’s International Cancer Research Centre in Lyon reminds us that “despite using a high protection factor cream, the risk of skin cancer can be increased by prolonged sunbathing.” Indeed, the more you expose yourself to the sun, the higher the dose of UV rays you will receive, and with that comes a higher risk of melanoma.
In fact he recommends, “not exposing yourself for any longer than you would without sun cream”. Dr Autier also suggests that advertising and packaging for sun products should alert consumers to the risks associated with prolonged exposure. One last practical tip: remember to reapply your sun cream every two hours and, of course, whenever you have been in the water.
