Tai Chi – good for morale… and for the knees

[10 December 2009 - 10h43]

For the elderly, doing two 60-minute sessions of Tai Chi per week can considerably reduce the pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee.

In fact it can, with advantage, replace the more traditional “analgesics and stretching” approach. Stretching is fine of course, but on the whole it’s better to do without the analgesics…

This is the result of a study conducted in the United States. Gaining a better understanding of your body and its own limitations, improving knee mobility … the benefits of this martial art – yes, it is indeed a “martial” art! – are numerous.

Tai Chi, like any moderate form of exercise, is good for your health. Exercise sessions make demands on the body … but done gently it promotes flexibility, muscle work and endurance. In fact, one of the main benefits is “mental”: the breathing and relaxation aspects help to achieve a general state of “well-being”. Which means that Tai Chi can act as a kind of psychological shield against the pain caused by arthritis of the knee, freeing up both the mind… and the body!
