Drinking very hot tea on a regular basis appears to increase the risk of oesophageal cancer!

A British study in fact points the finger firmly at this beverage in the development of this type of cancer, which causes 500,000 death each year around the world. This is important news because it has been generally agreed that along with tobacco, alcohol is the primary risk factor for oesophageal cancer.

The fact that very hot tea emerges so significantly in this study is because it was conducted in the province of Golestan in northern Iran, where the incidence of oesophageal carcinoma is one of the highest in the world. Researchers wanted to know why these Iranians were so often affected by this type of cancer. Three hundred sufferers were monitored over several months and compared with a control group of 600 volunteers in good health. Their conclusion is that, drinking tea at a temperature of over 65°C doubles the risk of oesophageal cancer. And drinking it a temperature of over 70°C increases it eight-fold! So the advice is simple: wait a few minutes before drinking your tea…
