Testosterone, a vital hormone
[mis à jour le 12 September 2006 à 10h35]
When testosterone levels drop around the age of forty, the risk of premature death literally rockets. That is the conclusion of an American team who studied the link between this male hormone and mortality.
Pr Molly Shores and her colleagues at Washington University in Seattle measured the level of testosterone in 858 men aged 40. Of them, more than one-third had a level described as low. “Compared with men whose testosterone level was normal, their risk of dying within four years was 88% higher”, says the author. “We cannot explain this link. We must therefore carry out broader forward-looking studies to understand the mechanism behind this high mortality rate”. Source: JAMA, August 2006
