The art of the tooth brushing …

Under attack from the bacteria present in food and also in tobacco and alcohol, our teeth and gums are fragile. But a few good habits will help you to keep them healthy. Mostly these rely on effective brushing – so here are some golden rules!
- Use a brush with flexible bristles and a small head. How about using an electric toothbrush? This can improve brushing quality and does an excellent job of removing dental plaque. In fact it is the mechanical action of brushing that eliminates plaque. In theory it is not essential to use toothpaste, although it does help to get rid of tartar;
- Try to brush your teeth – ideally at least – three times a day, after each meal. You should brush for 3 minutes with a manual toothbrush and 2 minutes if using an electric toothbrush. The night-time brushing is the most important;
- Replace your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head every 2 to 3 months;
- If necessary, use dental floss too. This is an excellent complement to brushing if you have healthy gums. On the other hand, if your gums are not so healthy you may need to use a little interdental brush to get rid of bacteria. Ask your pharmacist or dentist for advice.
