The bilberry – an attractive plant … and so much more…

[10 September 2010 - 10h10]

More commonly known as the bilberry, Vaccinium myrtillus is a plant with countless beneficial properties. It is of course known mainly for its delicious, if somewhat acidic, purple berries. These are especially rich in flavonoids which are known for their antioxidant properties. Ready to go picking?

Interestingly, bilberries are particularly highly rated by … aircraft pilots! This is because they are very rich in vitamin A, which helps to improve the way our eyes adjust to the dark. But that’s not all: these little berries also have a beneficial effect on the health of our blood vessels. Not to mention their protective effect on our gastric mucous.

Summer is the season for picking bilberries, which in French are also known as the “grape of the woods”. But you need to know how to recognise this plant which prefers to grow in areas of humid undergrowth. Apart from the berries, which are pea-sized and somewhere between black and purple in colour, you can also recognise it easily by its oval, dentate leaves. Slip a few into your basket – you can use them in infusions if you suffer from fever or from irritation of the larynx.
