The lipids known as triglycerides
Like cholesterol, triglycerides form part of the body’s lipid components. They are also the storage lipids of animals and plants. In humans, they are our main energy store and are found – naturally enough – in the adipose tissue. They are also present in the blood and derive mainly from the assimilation of fats, sugars and alcohol.
Assessing triglyceride levels in blood is vital in establishing the risk of thrombosis or of the formation of blood clots in the arteries. Raised levels depend on a number of factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and food that is too fatty. But there are also genetic factors.
