The return of DDT!

Thirty years after being banned, the WHO has just rehabilitated DDT in the fight against malaria. It is in fact recommending this insecticide once again, provided that it is used “advisedly”. Explanation below.
After carrying out new evaluations, “we are able to recommend the use of DDT as a spray in homes in the affected areas”, explains Dr Anarfi Asamoa-Baah at the WHO. “Its effectiveness has been proven, and there is no risk to human health if it is properly used”.
“Of the 12 insecticides approved by the WHO, DDT is indeed the most effective”, continues Dr Arata Kochi, Director of the malaria department. When sprayed in homes, it reduces the transmission of malaria by 90%. “Use of DDT is now a major strategy to combat malaria. In the same way as the use of mosquito nets impregnated with insecticide”.
