Thinking of tooth whitening? Avoid ultraviolet treatments!
Are you tempted by the idea of having a smile like Tom Cruise? Who wouldn’t be?
But don’t be too quick to succumb to the temptation of tooth whitening treatments. Doctors in Norway are warning about the risks associated with tooth-whitening methods that rely on using ultraviolet (UV) rays.
In her article, Dr Ellen Bruzell of the Nordic Institute of Dental Materials in Oslo stresses that this procedure in fact damages the tooth wall. She has identified "a larger number of lesions on teeth whitened by ultraviolet than on other teeth". And such lesions make tooth enamel more vulnerable.
And that’s not all. The ultraviolet light used – although meant only to target the teeth – is believed also to attack facial skin as well as the eyes. "It’s a bit like sunbathing without protection in the middle of a summer’s afternoon in London’s famous Hyde Park", comments Britain’s Royal Society of Chemistry.
Representatives of the Society don’t beat about the bush. Ultraviolet tooth whitening is not simply a con. It also presents a danger to the skin and eyes, they point out. If, despite all this, you are still tempted by the tooth-whitening myth, make a point of finding out about risk-free methods.
