Tuberculosis: the battle starts with screening!

[3 November 2006 - 08h55]

To fight tuberculosis, it must first be detected in time. Most people affected by TB in developing countries do not have access to rapid, accurate screening. This alarming fact emerges from a recent WHO report.

It puts the spotlight on a real problem in combating tuberculosis. “Every year, 1.7 million people die (...) often because the infection was not diagnosed or diagnosed too late to be treated”.

The advanced diagnostic techniques currently available on the market are too complex and extremely expensive for the poorest countries. Yet they are the ones which need it most! Over 80% of TB victims live in such countries. The traditional tests using smears, x-rays and cultures do not permit the accurate identification of active tuberculosis. Particularly in patients who are also infected with HIV.

The paradox is that the market exists, and it is enormous. According to the WHO, if a really effective test that is not too costly were available, up to 204 million copies of it could be sold immediately! A real blockbuster…
