Vegetables, fruit and meat … let your baby discover them gradually
Diversification of an infant’s diet can begin between the ages of 4 and 6 months. But breast milk or breast milk substitutes must still remain the essential part of the diet.
During this period, your baby will still need his 4 daily bottles of milk as these provide him with all the calcium, iron and vitamins he needs. And when it comes to vegetables, take things slowly. Introduce just one new vegetable a day so that your baby discovers the particular taste of each one separately.
Variety is best when introducing fruit too. A fortnight after introducing your baby to vegetables, you can start introducing “home-made” fruit purées. But be careful: if you introduce fruit at the same time as vegetables, your child will find the sweetness of the fruit more appealing and that will make it more difficult to get him to accept green beans or spinach!
It is not until the 9th month that you should begin introducing meat, fish or egg and then just once a day. For further information, visit: www.destinationsante.com
