Vitamin B12 – a natural way to preserve cognitive function
[mis à jour le 6 October 2008 à 12h13]
It’s a well known fact that vitamin B12 is essential for the brain to function well. And also, it seems, for keeping the brain in good condition.
Until now, however, it was thought that only massive doses of vitamin supplements were really effective. Now, for the first time, British researchers are highlighting the long-term benefits of this vitamin when absorbed naturally as part of our diet.
“We discovered that elderly people whose diet is high in vitamin B12 have six times less risk of suffering from memory problems, state the researchers in the columns of the specialist journal Neurology.
The researchers from Oxford University support their claim with research carried out on a cohort of 107 individuals monitored over 5 years. Aged between 61 and 87, all underwent memory tests and brain scans.
“The results are extremely interesting, the researchers conclude. Simply enriching the vitamin B12 content of the diet is sufficient to help preserve our mental capacity to a some extent. So there’s no need to start taking supplements”. In fact, just adopting a healthy diet should provide the recommended daily requirements. As a reminder – vitamin B12 is found in fish, meat, milk and cereals.
