What are the risks of pregnancy late in life?
After the age of 40, the complications associated with pregnancy become more common.
Pregnant women are at risk of a whole range of complications such as diabetes of pregnancy, high blood pressure, but also thyroid dysfunctions and uterine haemorrhage during the third trimester.
Despite recent advances in obstetric care, the percentage of still births also increases with the mother’s age. The risk of giving birth prematurely is also higher at 40 years old than at 30.
And apart from the health risks to the mother and child, the other major risk is simply not having a child at all. It is important to bear in mind that only a third of 40-year old women who want a child actually succeed. Whereas 94% of women aged 30 are successful in becoming mothers. The aim here is of course not to make women feel guilty but to make them aware of the risks.
