What causes heartburn?

[30 April 2009 - 11h45]

What causes heartburn?

We’ve all suffered from heartburn. It’s usually caused by reflux of gastric juices from the stomach into the oesophagus.

There are many causes for this: relaxation of the sphincter muscle between these two organs; overeating, which causes the stomach to swell; and too much abdominal pressure caused by being overweight or poor posture, sitting in a hunched up position, for example.

Smoking, too much alcohol and very spicy food can also aggravate matters. So be careful. If you do nothing to rectify matters, this acidity can lead to inflammation of the stomach or the oesophagus: in other words gastritis and oesophagitis. Have a word with your pharmacist. He will be able to recommend a suitable antacid and by taking this and following his advice, things should return to normal. However, if the problem continues for more than 10 to 15 days, you should go and see your doctor.
