When your memory goes… so does your sleep
Elderly women who suffer from memory problems often have real difficulty sleeping. In fact, insomnia appears to be twice as common among women with memory loss than among those whose memory is unaffected.
And these are serious conclusions. The findings come as the result of a study conducted over the course of 15 years on a group of 2,500 women with an average age of 69. At the start of the study, the researchers found no evidence that would lead them to suspect cognitive problems. Each year the participants undertook different tests to evaluate their intellectual capacities.
At the end of the study, the researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, asked all the women to respond to a questionnaire concerning their quality of sleep. “According to the authors, memory loss in these patients can lead to considerable anxiety. This, whether or not accompanied by some form of depression, could then affect sleep. They also put forward another explanation: changes in brain structure and function associated with Alzheimer’s disease could be implicated in sleeping problems. To be continued…
