White-fleshed fruit and vegetables can help to ward off strokes
It’s a well-known fact that eating fruit and vegetables is good for our health. But did you know that fruit and vegetables with white flesh – such as apples, pears, bananas and cauliflower – are especially effective at helping to prevent the risk of cerebrovascular accidents (strokes)?
Over the course of 10 years, researchers in Holland studied the link between the colour of fruit and vegetables and the risk of CVA. Green, orange, yellow, red, violet and white – the entire spectrum of fruit and vegetable colours was carefully examined.
Their results showed that only those participants who were keen apple and pear eaters benefited from a 52% lower risk of suffering a CVA.
According to the researchers, each daily 25 gram portion of white-fleshed fruit and vegetables is associated with a 9% reduction in the risk of CVA. For example, the average weight of an apple is 120 grams, so it’s hardly an insurmountable effort to make …

Of course, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t eat other fruit and vegetables too. Each has its own benefits. Grapes, for example, are very high in potassium and kiwi fruit is great for vitamin C, so it would be a great shame not to include these in your diet. The researchers also state that it is a little too early yet for doctors to advise their patients to change their eating habits on the basis of these initial results – further confirmation is needed.
