Wholegrain cereals are good for the heart
According to an American study, regular consumption of wholegrain cereals helps to reduce the risk of cardiac insufficiency. Rich in vitamins, minerals, fibre and anti-oxidants, they are highly beneficial for the cardiovascular system.
Between 1982 and 2006, Professor Luc Djoussé and his team at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, monitored the cereal consumption of more than 10,000 doctors, all in very good health. Surprisingly though, those who ate wholegrain cereals 7 times a week proved to have a 28% reduced risk of cardiac insufficiency compared with those who did not eat these cereals. The same was true of those who ate just one bowl of cereal a week, with Professor Djoussé noting a 14% reduced risk.
“These are strong and credible arguments that should encourage people, and not only children, to eat cereal every morning”, states Professor Djoussé. “Daily intake of wholegrain cereal at breakfast helps to lower blood pressure, combat bad cholesterol and thus prevent heart attacks”. Providing, of course, that these cereals are not accompanied by industrial amounts of sugar and other sweetened products containing dried-fruit!
