Will the French Environmental Summit be a spur to action in Europe?
The ‘Environmental Grenelle’ – a several-week process which is currently culminating in a two-day green summit taking place in Paris – is being followed with interest by the World Health Organization (WHO) regional Office for Europe, in Copenhagen. Dr Nata Menabde, Deputy Regional Director, is hopeful that “some strong intentions will result in the field of the environment and health”.
To the extent of galvanizing action on a European scale? “This could obviously be the case”, she confirmed to us. Which implies that the conclusions of this summit could also serve as a “suggestion box” for other countries.
“Even if the WHO is not physically present at this meeting, since it does not fall within our mandate, the initiative is in line with what we are trying to promote in Europe”, continues Dr Menabde. In the same way, for example, as the initiatives already taken to reduce the use of pesticides.
“We are delighted that President Sarkozy has managed to bring together all the parties concerned”. All the more so as the subject is a particularly topical one for the WHO which has, in fact, just announced the theme for World Health Day 2008: protecting health from climate change”…
