Work accidents: creating a culture of prevention in Africa

[11 May 2007 - 09h50]
[mis à jour le 11 May 2007 à 09h55]

In global terms, almost one fatal accident in five (18%) occurs in Africa. Yet the continent accounts for only 2% of jobs worldwide. Figures like these alone are reason enough to launch a major prevention campaign.

And just such a campaign is being organised by the International Social Security Association (ISSA), the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Inter-African Association for the Prevention of Occupational Risks (IAPRP). The Social Security services of eight African countries are also heavily involved: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo.

The aim is to lay the foundations in Africa of a genuine culture of prevention of work-related risks. As the organisers of the campaign point out, “raising awareness of the risks of accidents and industrial illnesses is lacking (at present). The very idea that it could be possible to prevent them is far from widespread, including among the working population”. If you’d like to know more, you can read or listen to the online information posted by Destination Santé during the recent World Day for Health and Safety at Work.
