Yoga can also benefit those suffering from illness
Yoga – which means the union of body and mind – is aptly named.
According to an American study, this technique, which has been around for 5,000 years can be psychologically beneficial to women being treated for breast cancer.
Although the researchers were working with only a small group of 44 women, their results appear very promising. All the women monitored were breast cancer sufferers. Half took part in yoga sessions for 10 weeks while the remaining women formed a control group.
At the end of the study, a 50% reduction in depressive symptoms was observed in the group practising yoga, with a 12% increase in the number of women reporting a sense of well-being. And the women who felt worst at the start of the study were also those who benefited most from the yoga sessions.
